I have stayed in four locations when I grew up.
The first one was with my grandparents-in-law and my mother’s sisters in a military base in Nanchang, before 5-year-old.
The second is with my parents also in a military base in Fujian, before 12-year-old.
Then after my father was transferred to civilian work, we moved back to Nanchang. I lived there 14 years before I came to the U.S.A.
The last one, my father’s hometown where my grandparents are living now. I haven’t lived there except we stayed there several days on holidays.
ONE | Old City of Nanchang
This is a series of old city of Nanchang, for now, we have built a modern city on the opposite side of Gan River. These old buildings may be destroyed in the future. I usually find traditional food in these streets. The noisy streets were a part of my adolescence.

TWO | Village of Roots
This is a very small village where my father grew up, and my grandparents are still living there. My father was left here at a young age when he served in the military.
I hated to visit here when I was young because of a bumpy road. The taxi driver even refused to go there, because they wanted to protect their car. The kitchen and restroom are separated from the house, It was not convenient for me, especially, I want to pee at night.
I don’t remember the moment that I feel relax and happy when I got back there. It is so quiet now, most the young people have left the village, and moved to a city. I sat in the backyard, birds were chirping, cocks were crowing, sometimes dogs were barking. My grandparents are still growing vegetables by themselves. It takes five minutes to walk there. Winds were blowing the bamboo stand. Ducks were swimming in the pond. Fields were beside a creek. I picked some vegetables.
I enjoy the life there, but doI want to live there?
I’m going to keep quiet.
